EMDR Therapy

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing

EMDR Therapy is an integrative therapeutic technique that helps people to heal from traumatic experiences. EMDR therapy is evidenced based and is considered a recommended treatment of choice by several international mental health organizations for healing PTSD from traumatic events such as rape, sexual abuse, auto accidents, and combat. EMDR helps to rewire the neural networks of your brain that were formed in trauma and inform your everyday interpretations of the world.

When we go through trauma, we “learn” something from the experience because our brains physically store the information within the networks of the brain cells called neurons. Networks form our unconscious mind, determining how our brain interprets the world around us and governs how we feel from moment to moment. Unprocessed memories are physically stored in the brain and pop up to color our view of and response to every new situation we encounter.

These unprocessed memories undermine our happiness by causing repetitions of feelings, physical sensations and beliefs that occurred within traumatic situations, even when the danger has passed. EMDR Therapy targets the unprocessed memories containing negative emotions, sensations and beliefs. By activating the information processing system, EMDR helps you to digest old memories that were not fully able to be processed in the moment of the traumatic event. This allows you to let go of the pain that has been trapped in your system while retaining the useful strengths or wisdom you may have learned through your life experiences. Memories of the events will be stored in your brain in a way that is no longer damaging.
